32% of CVD Patients were Hospitalized during 1st and 2nd Wave

A study published in Global Heart, the official journal of the World Heart Federation stated that nearly one-third (32%) of the Covid-19 patients who required hospitalization during the first and the second wave of the pandemic had a history of cardiovascular diseases. The study was a prospective analysis conducted between June 6, 2020, to Sept 15, 2021, that included 5,000+ patients from 23 countries, including more than 800 Covid infected in India.

The most common CVD reported in the study were coronary artery diseases, heart failure, stroke, etc. The study reported coronary artery diseases to be the leading cause of hospitalization afflicting 10.9% of Covid 19 positive patients. This was followed by heart failure (5.5%), stroke (3.7%), arrhythmia (3.0%), and other CVDs in the study.
